He was a student leader of the Awami League and participated in the Liberation War as a freedom fighter. Shahabuddin was nominated by the Awami League Parliamentary Party as their candidate for President of Bangladesh and was officially elected on 13 February 2023. He was sworn in on 24 April 2023.
